MSBC Program Overview


Program Mission

The mission of the Master of Science in Business Continuity Management program is to develop business continuity professionals in both the public and private sphere who will secure their organization against business disruptions. The program serves as a gateway into the profession, rounds out and deepens knowledge of business continuity principles for those in the field, and develops leaders who will advance understanding of continuity principles.

Program Goals

  • Students will graduate with a thorough understanding of the business, governance, policy, technical, and management issues that are the foundation of effective solutions to current and emerging threats, and will develop the skills necessary to communicate those issues to others in their organization.
  • Students will be able to develop, implement, and test continuity programs, as well as mitigation and risk management strategies that reduce the likelihood of a business disruption.
  • Students will gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of disaster management and recovery.
  • Students will understand the convergence of business continuity with other fields, including physical and information security, in order to bring together the various constituencies in an organization-wide continuity program.
  • Students will be able to take leadership of an enterprise-wide business continuity program.
  • Students will be able to contribute to the profession through professional activities.

Unique Curriculum

The business continuity manager today must combine many different talents, from risk management, security, and response to organizational management and business systems. You will fully master the policies, procedures and structure of an organization-wide business continuity program, gaining expertise in both theory and practice. Accreditation

Norwich University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Class Size

Small class sizes (not more than 16 students) ensure you receive individualized attention directly from faculty. You also develop close relationships with fellow learners from around the world as you interact with them creating a vast network of professional contacts.

Credit for Certifications

If you have years of experience and training in the field, you want recognition for that work. Professionals who have achieved designated certifications in business continuity management are granted a waiver from the Foundations of Business Continuity Management seminar at the beginning of the program. Contact our admissions advisors to see if you qualify for this waiver.

The Master of Science in Business Continuity Management is structured as follows:
  • Four start dates per year; March, June, September and December
  • Six, six-credit, eleven-week seminars, with a waiver of seminar one for those with the proper certifications
  • Complete all coursework in 18 months or less
  • Graduate 15-24 months from your enrollment date
  • Capstone residency experience
  • Individual Consultancy Project threaded throughout the program directly relates concepts of business continuity to your workplace
  • Online, highly experiential, asynchronous curricular activities including threaded discussions, reading, writing, and workplace-oriented assignments
